Rajkahani is inspired by the timeless tale of Shakuntala. It is a Swarnachari Sari with intricate motifs embroidered in golden thread.
Shakuntala is one of the most beloved tales from ancient Indian literature, prominently featured in the Mahabharata and later immortalized by the classical Sanskrit playwright Kalidasa in his play “Abhijnanashakuntalam” (The Recognition of Shakuntala).
The Tale
Shakuntala, the daughter of sage Vishwamitra and Menaka, is raised by sage Kanva in his hermitage. King Dushyanta, on a hunting trip, meets and marries Shakuntala, giving her a ring as a token of his love. However, sage Durvasa curses Shakuntala to be forgotten by Dushyanta because she neglects to greet him, lost in thoughts of her husband. Durvasa modifies the curse, allowing Dushyanta’s memory to return upon seeing the ring.
Shakuntala, pregnant, goes to Dushyanta’s palace but loses the ring in a river. Dushyanta, under the curse, does not recognize her, and she returns heartbroken to the hermitage. Later, a fisherman finds the ring, and Dushyanta’s memory is restored. He reunites with Shakuntala and their son Bharata, and they live happily ever after.
